Taking a longer leave? Awesome — but it’s your responsibility to make sure work is covered, your team is informed, and your return is smooth. Use this guide as your checklist.

✅ Before You Leave
- Plan ahead → Inform your manager & team early, and align dates with others’ vacations/projects.
- Document your work → List ongoing projects/tasks, note what you’ll finish vs. what needs coverage.
- Pick a backup → Appoint someone to cover, give them context, access, and key contacts.
- Prepare a summary → Create a short doc with priorities, risks, and stakeholders; walk your backup through it.
- Notify others → Let teammates/partners know who to contact, and set your OOO in email/Slack.
- Finish loose ends → Wrap up critical tasks; clearly flag anything incomplete and who owns it.
🔑 While You’re Away
- Trust your backup and team.
- Stay away from Slack and emails! We recommend fully unplugging during time off.
- Let people know your boundaries clearly.
📥 When You Return
- Block time to catch up (don’t schedule meetings back-to-back on Day 1).
- Get a summary from your backup or manager of key happenings.
- Review updates, then ease back into normal flow.
💡 Tips for Stress-Free Handovers
- Start handover prep at least 1–2 weeks before you leave.
- Hold a quick handover meeting with your backup to clarify open points.
- Spread tasks across people if possible (don’t overload one person).
